IlmFest 2010 Poster

When I was approached about making the IlmFest 2010 poster, I was excited but at the same time realized the difficulty in coming up with a concept. It was definitely a unique challenge … to make a poster which symbolizes the celebration of knowledge and captures the purpose of a conference that deals with and tackles the many societal issues that we are currently facing. So after much thought, I came up with the current poster design, Alhamdulillah.
The concept that I wanted to illustrate and emphasize is that knowledge is the very foundation for everything … how we go through life, how we resolve problems, how we worship and, ultimately, how we approach every decision and every action in life. Without that knowledge then all of us would be lost. Just as Adam was risen in rank by the knowledge Allah (swt) had blessed him with, the same applies to the rest of humanity.
We are honored by the knowledge that we implement in our journey to get closer to our Creator, Al-Khaliq. And when we dont seek knowledge, we fall away from Allah (swt) and drown in our sins. So in the poster, the book (knowledge) is our foundation and land that keeps us up and afloat … without it we sink and we go astray. We have the masjid and the city to illustrate the modern dilemma we face of finding the right balance between our American and Muslim identities, as many of us are first generation muslims (thus, the boat). However, it is that knowledge (the book) which beautifies everything … illustrated with the elegant swirls(purple symbolizing Al Maghrib) and greenery that flourish throughout the city and the masjid. The poster was meant to be bright and beautiful, instead of showing a gloomy or dark motif of Islam, which is common in a lot of posters.

SubhanAllah…that’s amazing. When I’d first seen the poster, I thought it was beautiful…and now that I know the concept and reasoning behind it (in fact, the fact that there WAS true thought and ideas behind it, not just a design as a lot of Islamic posters may possess today), MashaAllah, I appreciate it so much more now..
Great job, may Allah bless ihsaan|fusion’s work.
